MobileWith the popularity of new mobile devices such as the Blackberry and the iPhone, Mobile learning (mLearning) has arrived.

mLearning is the next logical step to providing on-the-go training. It allows learning to happen across locations, when convenient for the student and by its very nature encourages a more social learning experience.

This type of medium encourages Edutainment, engaging and fun learning, as it is easier to combine gaming with learning.

eCom Scotland have established a lead in mLearning over the last 3 years through research and development within a number of EU funded projects.

EU Funded Projects

Mobile Video and Associated Applications for SME's (MOVAAS) & Mobile Video Solution Applications in Learning (MOVSAL) 

These research projects were undertaken with O2 and Adam Smith College in Kirkcaldy from 2005 - 2007.  Initial applications were built to operate on O2 XDA Exec running Windows Mobile Version 5.0 and Internet Explorer Mobile edition. A GPRS, 3G or WiFi connection was used to access the system through the XDAs. The administration and office side of the system was accessed through a normal PC with web access and Internet Explorer 5.5 or above.

Examples of uses include:

  • Mobile submission of e-Assessment for practical including image and video evidence
  • Mobile reporting of Mining hazards using GPRS and input forms
  • Mobile submission of financial details including on-line signatures and PDF creation to email
  • Mobile analysis of investment portfolios, with buy andsell option on mobile.
