Finding my Why in WES

Sitting in the City Chambers in Edinburgh last week undertaking my training to be a Women’s Enterprise Scotland (WES) Ambassador I was asked to write down Why I was there.

At that moment, I couldn’t think past: “Someone told me I should” however if truth be told it’s usually the things people tell me I shouldn’t do that inspire me to take action.  Like when my husband tells me I can’t go hillwalking with a child in a buggy!

So how come I am so motivated to get involved in WES and what is my Why?

Women’s Enterprise Scotland (WES) is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company which works to create an entrepreneurial environment where women-led businesses can flourish.

The simple fact is that more women-owned businesses in Scotland means more money for the economy. Research shows that if the numbers of women-led businesses increased to equal those of men, our national bank balance would be at least 5% better off. That’s equivalent to a £7.6 billion boost to the economy, minimum.

But first: “To be it, you must see it”

I’ve been very lucky to have been inspired by great women with relatable experiences, however they have been the exception rather than the rule.   Even now at eCom Scotland as a 100% female owned tech based company, we are a rarity in the world of enterprise, never mind in IT.

This is most likely where my ‘Why’ to become an ambassador is based. I have benefited from the encouragement of others and I feel a responsibility to pass on the lessons learned.

Whatever the Why, this is a great new challenge for all the new WES Ambassadors. And it can’t be as challenging as the hillwalking with a pram – I wouldn’t recommend it.
