eCom Scotland hails Gitex 2013 a great success!

It was billed as the number one ICT event in the region: nothing parallels GITEX, and it didn’t fail to deliver! GITEX is certainly the largest conference and, more importantly, the one with the greatest footfall that Ecom has ever attended.

We got a fleeting view of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as he passed the Scottish Pavilion, but unfortunately he did not stop by for some of eCom’s homemade tablet! Our traditional Scottish tablet was very popular, however, considering the other ‘freebies’ available across the 8 main halls and the Government hall. Giveaways included Apple iPads, with winners announced every hour; there was even a Lincoln MKZ car up for grabs, with one visitor winning this amazing prize at the end of the week.

The scale of the building, as well as the technology that was available, was quite overwhelming to the point that it was hard to see every stand and what was on offer. Luckily, with support from Scottish Development International (SDI), we as a group were able to capitalise on our collective marketing skills to attract as many people as possible to the Scottish Pavilion. We then segmented these delegates to the appropriate service or vendor within our pavilion. It was interesting to note that, for every visitor to the pavilion, we as a group were offering at least one product or service that touched on their remit. There was a great deal of mutual support amongst the attending companies and it was a privilege to spend the week with them.

Due to timely coverage by the Gulf News on the need for eLearning and gaming to deliver better training and information to the region, eLearning in particular was high on the agenda for many visitors, with the use of Smartphones for delivery being a key aspect. eCom has a proven track record in both these areas. We ultimately went to GITEX looking for channel partners, and to raise our profile and good name within the MENA region. This was a success, and will enable us to build on the projects we already have underway in the Saudi region.

A big ‘Thank you’ to Scottish Development International (SDI) for all their support prior to and while at GITEX, including the networking meetings and GlobalScot connections. We hope that we will be able to attend this event again and also to see more of Dubai – with the amount of construction work currently underway, it will be twice the size by the time we get back!
